Upgrade or Lose Access: Steam Drops Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

Steam has announced that it will no longer support Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 starting January 1, 2024. This means that after this date, the Steam client will no longer run on these versions of Windows. Users who want to continue playing their games or using any other products purchased through Steam will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

Why is the Change Happening?

The move is a necessary one, as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. Additionally, future versions of Steam will require Windows features and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

Although support won't end until 2024, Steam is strongly encouraging all Windows 7/8/8.1 users to update sooner rather than later. It's important to note that Microsoft has already ended security updates and technical support for Windows 7 in January 2020 and for Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running these operating systems, when connected to the internet, are susceptible to new malware and other exploits which will not be patched. This can cause your PC, Steam, and games to perform poorly or crash, and also puts your personal data at risk.

According to Steam's hardware and software survey conducted in February 2023, users who still use these older operating systems make up a tiny fraction of total users. Only 1.52% of Steam's users are still using Windows 7, while Windows 8 users make up just 0.34% of the user base. This means that upgrading to a newer version of Windows will not only keep your PC secure and up-to-date, but it will also ensure that you can continue to enjoy your favorite games on Steam.

Upgrade to a More Recent Version of Windows?

If you're currently using an older version of Windows and are unsure whether to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11, you've come to the right place.

The importance of updating to a supported operating system cannot be overstated, especially for gamers who rely on Steam to play their favorite titles. Without the necessary security updates and feature improvements provided by a modern operating system, users are at a higher risk of encountering performance issues, crashing, and even malware attacks that could compromise their personal information and online accounts.
